Anybody else have the same experience?  Relationships are so often times HARD.

If you are like me, when the HARD aspects of relationships occur, the mind and heart go racing in all kinds of different directions, whether to anger, fear, anxiety, doubt, fighting, fleeing, wanting to escape, or a myriad of other responses.

There is only ONE direction that can give stability, patience, perseverance, joy, and HOPE.  Direction: Upward to the God of the Bible because He has taken care of the most important relationship, reconciling us to Himself through the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  And because of Jesus and in Jesus, God is always up to something BIGGER in our relationships that are often HARD.

Paul Tripp says this that is so convicting to my heart.  “Our relationships are never just about us. They’re never just about our plans, our purposes, and our happiness. They’re never just about who we want to be around and what we’d like to offer or receive from those relationships. There’s always something bigger going on because there’s a God who is sovereign. He puts us right where he wants us and he never gets a wrong address! In our relationships he takes us where we don’t want to go in order to produce in us and others what we couldn’t achieve on our own.”

If you want to read his longer article that gives a vivid example that is challenging and encouraging, here it is.

Preach the Word

As I reflect on my life and ministry that God has entrusted to me, what regularly rings out from Scripture that captures my heart is to “Preach the Word.”

Sometimes, honestly, it is hard, particularly because many people don’t like the Word of God, nor people preaching the Word to them.  So, I am regularly thankful for times in the Word and in devotions, just being with the Lord, my Heavenly Father, and being reminded of His call in Scripture.

In reading Ezekiel this morning, I was astounded by the glory of the Lord in chapter 1.   As Ezekiel saw the Lord, he could do nothing except what all others have done as well.  He fell on his face.  God is so glorious.

Then, as the Lord lifts Ezekiel up, the Lord gives Ezekiel a call that he is compelled to answer because of how great and glorious God is.  Multiple times in chapter 2-3, God calls him to “speak my words to Israel, whether they hear or refuse to hear.”  This reminded me of my calling as well, to Preach the Word because of the glory of the Lord who gave His Word, not because of the receptivity of those who hear it.

Please pray that I would daily be freshly affected by the glory of the Lord, begin the day in humility on my face before Him, and being compelled to preach His Word in season and out of season.  God can and God will give new life and transform lives through His Preached Word, but that is not the ultimate reason why I preach.  I preach God’s Word because God is all-glorious and deserves to be known and proclaimed to all the nations.

I have been prayerfully seeking to think more about heaven and the glories of heaven (having a perfect body untainted with sinful desires, having an imperishable body not susceptible to any illnesses, disease, or injury, being forever with the Lord, beholding my Lord and Savior face to face, forever growing in worship and delight of the One True God, and doing all this with a multitude that no one can count from every tribe, tongue, nation).  Just to name a few of the many things I am looking forward to!

As I think more about the glories of heaven, the more I ask myself, “Why am I still here as a Christian?  Why are we, as corporate local churches, still here on earth?”  One of the big follow-up questions that I am constantly asking is this: “What will I no longer do once I get to heaven?”

One huge answer: I will no longer evangelize, tell people about the Gospel of Jesus Christ once I get to heaven for the rest of eternity.

So, what is one huge reason why we are still here as Christians?  To Evangelize – to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to others and help people become disciples of Christ and live out the Gospel in all of their life in the context of Christ’s body.

With that said, I commend to you the latest E-Journal from 9Marks on Evangelism.  May we be increasingly faithful to one of the huge reasons why God has left us here on earth.
