Bible Reading Commitment, Encouragement, and Challenge

June 29 –  Leviticus 17, Jeremiah 43-45, Job 41, Romans 2

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • Focusing on Jeremiah 43-45
  • Sin and idolatry are so deceptive and screw things up so much
  • Sin and idolatry mess with the core of who we are and how we see and interpret the world, and it destroys our abilities to accurately do so
  • In chapter 44 of Jeremiah, the prophet speaks God’s clear word of judgment against idolatry
  • But, the people somehow think gloriously about their days of idolatry
  • The people claim that when they made offerings to idols and worshiped them, THEN, like was great and there were no trials and difficulties in life
  • So, the people refuse to turn from idols because they think that the idols are  better gods
  • (How deceptive idolatry is)
  • (How powerful idolatry to make us blind and oblivious to reality, and to block out all the negative things that come with idolatry)
  • But, God, the one and only True God, He will not be mocked, and God will punish all idolatry
  • The people’s willing rebellion of God and active choice of idolatry shows that their judgment is just and deserved (just like ours because we are just the same – just the idols may be different)

How Points to Christ

  • Jesus is the light of the world that can open blind eyes and show the folly of idolatry
  • Jesus is the One who changes hearts to love God and not idols
  • Jesus died for our idolatry and because on our own, we could not break free from the power idols have over us

Apply

  • Please pray for understanding of the idols of my life
  • Please pray for eyes to see the deadly and false promises of idols in my life
  • And please pray that I would actively seek to kill all idolatry in my life (which I have a lot of) to worship the one true God through Jesus Christ

Bible Reading Commitment, Encouragement, and Challenge

June 28 –  Psalm 72, Jeremiah 41-42, Job 40, Romans 1

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • Focusing on Romans 1
  • The Gospel is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek
  • For in the Gospel the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, the righteous shall live by faith
  • (Never move on from the Gospel because apart from the Gospel, we are laboring without the power of God)
  • (The Gospel is not just the ABC of Christianity)
  • (The Gospel is the A through Z of Christianity)
  • We need the Gospel as the power of God because the rest of Romans 1 shows that all mankind has exchanged the truth and glory of God for lies and deceits of creation and this world

How Points to Christ

  • In the Gospel, Jesus gives us His righteousness through faith

Apply

  • Please pray that in everything I do, I would make the Gospel central
  • Without the Gospel central in everything, I do life and ministry without the power of God for salvation
  • And please pray that God would use the power in His Gospel to save many people

Bible Reading Commitment, Encouragement, and Challenge

June 27 –  Psalm 70-71, Jeremiah 39-40, Job 39, Acts 28

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • Focusing on Acts 28
  • After a long time and through various trials, Paul finally arrives in Rome
  • Wherever Paul went, even though he was a prisoner, he was a blessing and a light for the Gospel
  • On the Island of Malta, he displayed the power of Christ in healing people
  • Once in Rome, he boldly proclaimed from the Scriptures, seeking to convince all people about Jesus from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets
  • Some were convinced and some did not believe
  • (It is the same Gospel – our role is to preach)
  • (God’s role is to convince by changing people’s hearts)
  • In God’s sovereignty, He led Paul to Rome to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ for two year with all boldness and without hindrance

How Points to Christ

  • All Scripture points to Christ
  • Paul was convinced and sought to show others how all of Scripture points to Christ

Apply

  • Please pray that I would seek to be faithful in every circumstance, looking for opportunities to proclaim Christ to all
  • Please pray that I would trust the power of God’s Word to save, that I would preach it clearly, fully, and with all boldness
  • And please pray that God would save many through the proclamation of His Word

Bible Reading Commitment, Encouragement, and Challenge

June 26 –  Leviticus 16, Jeremiah 38, Job 38, Acts 27

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • Focusing on Job 38
  • God’s response to Job is one of the most humbling sections of Scripture, along with one of the most encouraging sections of Scripture
  • It is humbling because the truth and reality is that no human being has any right to question God and darken God’s counsel
  • Job tried it with God, but it was God who answered Job out of the whirlwind and tell Job to dress for action like a man: God will question him, and he must answer God, not the other way around
  • Then, God lists a bombardment of questions to demonstrate His unique authority, power, wisdom, greatness, and glory
  • Job, and no man was there when God laid the foundation of the earth
  • Job, and no man can determine the measurements of the universe
  • Job, and no man can determine where and when proud waves will be stayed
  • Job, and no man has commanded the morning to know its place
  • Job, and no man can force anything in creation to change, whether to rain or snow
  • Job, and no man can change the location of the stars
  • Only GOD!  Only GOD can do these things and has done these things – like they were nothing and no effort to Him
  • (Who then is man to question God?)
  • This section of Scripture is not only humbling though and rightfully putting us in our place, but it is also encouraging
  • It is encouraging because while so many things in life remind us of our weakness, lack of wisdom, and inability to change our circumstances, GOD is able to
  • God is in control
  • And God is in GOOD control
  • And all that God deems GOOD, God is able to accomplish and bring about
  • So, in the bigger picture of things, when we can’t seem to discern what God is doing with His actions in this world, we can pray for faith to trust His good and wise heart and will

How Points to Christ

  • The climax of history shows and proves that in God’s sovereign plan – He is good and wise
  • God provided the means for the salvation of the world in His timing through Jesus Christ

Apply

  • Please pray that in times of trials, I would not get frustrated, complain, and be discontent
  • Please pray that in all circumstances, that I would trust in God and rejoice in God’s sovereign and good plan, even when I may not see how it is good
  • Please pray that I would seek to lift up the greatness and glory of God because only a super big view of God would be sufficient to give people hope amidst this fallen, broken, and very unpredictable world filled with evil, sin, and suffering
