Bible Reading Commitment, Encouragement, and Challenge

September 28 –  Psalm 108, Isaiah 40, Esther 7-8, 1 Timothy 2

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • Focusing on Isaiah 40
  • One of my favorite chapters (there are so many of them!)
  • The unique greatness of God as the One True God infinitely greater than all idols is displayed in this chapter
  • Even the descriptions in verse 12-17 are astounding
  • God can go to the Pacific Ocean, and scoop it all up, no sweat, in the hollow (the palm) of His hand (v. 12)
  • The entire heavens and galaxy, which we spend so many years studying, researching, and trying to measure, God can measure it all, and mark it off with a span (distance between thumb and pinky on one hand) – v. 12
  • God can pluck up mountains, and put them on a scale to measure them  v. 12
  • All the nations, in all their grandeur and supposed power and greatness and strength, are put a tiny, miniscule, insignificant drop of water in a bucket – v. 15
  • They are altogether like dust on a scale that you can just blow off
  • Like kids playing with sand on a beach, that’s how God can play with the coastlands, the entire eastern seaboard and west coast, picking them up and playing with them like sand on a beach – v. 15
  • But, lest we think that we and the nations are still something (a drop, dust, sand), verse 17 is clear, compared to God, all the nations are as nothing before Him, accounted by God as less than nothing and emptiness
  • When compared to God, all of creation turns to nothing
  • Why then, would we make idols or worship things in creation? (v. 18-20)
  • (Truly our idolatry, whether physical idols, or the manifold idols of our hearts – they are worthless and offensive to God)

How Points to Christ

  • This infinitely majestic and powerful and glorious God humbled Himself, and Jesus came to this earth to live the un-idolatrous life we didn’t, die the death our idolatry deserves, and resurrect in victory, so that we can be reconciled to the incomparable God of heaven
  • God is infinitely transcendent and also personally immanent with us through Jesus Christ

Apply

  • Please pray that I would be overwhelmed by the greatness of God and see the folly and offense of all the different idols of my heart that I am allured by and desire
  • Please pray that I would be quick to repent of my idolatry and to worship the One True God
  • And please pray that as we share the Gospel to others, that we would not be ashamed – because in reality, what do we have to be ashamed about?   Our God is the only, One True God that is so incomparably glorious that everything else
  • Please pray that God’s people would share about God and the Gospel with boldness and great joy and excitement!

This morning, I read a fantastic blog post / article on Gospel-Centered, Christ-centered Motherhood entitled, “You do not belong to your children, you belong to Christ.”

It was initially posted in May, so I wish I read it earlier, but I am thankful for the internet that these gems can be uncovered and discovered fairly quickly and passed on.  🙂

So, why am I, a man, a husband, and father writing a blog post highly encouraging all parents and aspiring parents to read this article that focuses on motherhood?

1) The implications of the biblical truths unpacked in the article apply to men, husbands, and fathers as well.  We do not belong primarily to our children, our wife, or ourselves.  We belong to Christ.  The Gospel saves us out of living for self and things in creation, to living in a new relationship with God first and foremost.

2) For the men, we are called by God to be the leaders of our home, and God holds us accountable for how we lead and encourage.   While wives and mothers are called to live out the principles in the article regardless, it doesn’t mean that we MEN should make it harder for them.   Let us lead well.  Let us even practically and intentionally help.  For example, let us try to do daddy & children dates/outings for the express purpose that our wife and mother of our children can spend extended time with the Lord in the Word and prayer, singing and journaling, etc.   Let us also be faithful to remind them that their primary relationship is with GOD, and everything will flow from that.    When we have those short conversations with our wives throughout the day through phone, text, or e-mail, let us be careful the emphasis of our conversations (asking how they are doing, whether they had time with the Lord yet, or if it is mainly logistical, asking about kids, asking about dinner, etc) – I am challenged and convicted to lead better!

3) I want this article to spread to many more mothers who desire to live Gospel-centered, Christ-centered lives!

Bible Reading Commitment, Encouragement, and Challenge

September 27 –  Psalm 107, Isaiah 38-39, Esther 5-6, 1 Timothy 1

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • Focusing on 1 Timothy 1
  • Why did Christ come into this world?
  • To boost our self-esteem?  No
  • To heal all of our medical problems?  No
  • To give us material wealth and possessions (or just get us out of our huge debt crisis that we caused through our own foolishness and selfishness)?  No
  • To be the best president ever?  No
  • To do social justice?  No
  • To be the best listener and compassionate sympathizer?  No
  • To give us a make-over for our self-image?  No
  • 1 Timothy 1:15 – “The saying is trustworthy and deserving of FULL acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world TO SAVE SINNERS, and Paul says, ‘of whom I am the foremost,’ whom I say as I know more fully my wretched heart, “of whom I am the foremost.'”
  • As undeserving sinners who receive mercy, we display Christ’s perfect patience and give hope to other undeserving sinners that if they repent and believe, Christ saves them!

How Points to Christ

  • Jesus Christ lived the life we didn’t, died the death we deserved, and resurrected from the dead in victory to save sinners!

Apply

  • Please pray that I would remember this glorious purpose for which Jesus Christ came into the world
  • Many of the other things are good things for us to work for, to help people out of poverty, promote social justice, build sound financial practices, elect a good president.
  • But, the greatest thing for us to work for is to preach the GOSPEL of Jesus Christ that sinners condemned to wrath and eternal separation from God can be SAVED and reconciled back to God
  • Everything we do (our work – building relationships with co-workers, our living in the home God provided – building relationships with neighbors, our daily habits – going to the gym, visiting coffee shops, visiting the park are venues to build relationships with sinners to share with them the GOSPEL that they may be saved)
  • Please pray that I (and the rest of God’s people) would not see a disconnect between living life and proclaiming Christ
  • Please pray that God’s people would grow in simply doing ordinary things with Gospel intentionality so that more people would hear the Gospel and be saved

Bible Reading Commitment, Encouragement, and Challenge

September 26 –  Numbers 30, Isaiah 37, Esther 3-4, 2 Thessalonians 3

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • Focusing on Isaiah 37 (and 36)
  • God is the One True God and He will not be mocked
  • Reading Assyria’s pride in chapter 36 is crazy
  • They call the One True God as all the other idols of the nations they conquered
  • They equated military conquest with the power of the god of the conquering nation, as if God can be shrunk into the size of military general
  • God can definitely be military general, but He is not bound to act in that way
  • But, God always acts to uphold the glory of His name, and when Assyria blatantly attacks it, God acts
  • (God acts in conjunction with the humble petitions and prayers of His people)
  • God is clear in 37:23 that the one they have mocked and reviled is the Holy One of Israel
  • In verse 35, God is clear that He will save the city for His own sake and for the sake of His promise to His servant David to establish a Davidic King who will reign forever
  • And God does – with one angel, in one night, God struck down 185,000 Assyrian soldiers, no sweat

How Points to Christ

  • God’s Davidic King is the Lord Jesus Christ
  • God’s Promise is sure and will come to pass
  • Jesus saves people, not just from military armies seeking to kill them physically, but Satan’s army seeking to kill all of us spiritually, physically, and eternally

Apply

  • Please pray that I would grow in prayer in asking God to continue to act for His glory
  • Please pray that my desires will increasingly be aligned with God’s purposes to glorify Himself
  • And please pray that more people would be humbled to worship and serve the One True God
