Bible Reading Commitment, Encouragement, and Challenge

April 30 –  Exodus 26, 2 Kings 9, Psalm 134-135, John 6

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • Focusing on John 6
  • Jesus feeds the 5,000
  • Jesus walks across water as on dry ground
  • (The two central miracles of the exodus are the crossing of the Red Sea and the provision of manna bread for the nation)
  • Through these miracles, Jesus is declaring Himself to be the Greater Moses
  • Whereas Moses was often overwhelmed by the people’s need and needed to ask God to provide bread, Jesus was confident with faith, and Jesus provided the bread Himself
  • And, whereas Moses provided bread regularly for physical sustenance, Jesus provides Himself as the Bread of Life who gives life to the world

How Points to Christ

  • Jesus is the Bread of Life
  • Whoever comes to Jesus shall not hunger and shall never thirst
  • Whoever feeds on Jesus as the Bread of Life will live forever

Apply

  • Please pray that I would daily believe in Jesus and His sufficiency for all things
  • Please pray that as I minister in this world and in the church, that I would not offer anything other than Jesus (including trying to offer myself as the answer to people’s problem), but to offer Jesus alone as the Bread of Life
  • I must regularly decrease and He must increase
  • Please pray that many would feast on Jesus for eternal life and the fullness of life in this life

Bible Reading Commitment, Encouragement, and Challenge

April 27 –  Exodus 24, 2 Kings 6, Psalm 126-128, John 4

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • Focusing on Psalm 127
  • Unless we are 100% dependent upon God, we are without hope
  • Unless God mercifully and graciously decides to work for the good of undeserving sinners, then we would be without hope
  • The Psalmist hammers home this truth with multiple analogies
  • A house cannot be built unless God builds it – the builders build in vain on their own
  • A city cannot be protected from enemies who want to invade and conquer it unless God is the never-sleeping, everything -seeing watchman for the city – even human watchmen who stay awake late and wake up really early do so in vain on their own
  • A family cannot be built with children as a heritage unless God opens the womb and produces life
  • God is the Sovereign ruler whom we are 100% dependent upon

How Points to Christ

  • Unless the Lord saves through His Son Jesus Christ, we strive for salvation and holiness in vain
  • Even if we try really hard to make up for our sinful thoughts, words, and deeds, we do so in vain because once an unholy sinners, we can never become holy on our own
  • We need Jesus Christ’s perfect holiness and righteousness given to us by grace
  • We need God to act and protect in and through the Gospel of Jesus Christ for God’s house in individual Christians and the corporate church to be built

Apply

  • Please pray that I would daily be humbled by my utter dependence upon the Lord for everything
  • Please pray that I would be growing as a man of prayer in recognition of my need for the Lord to build His house
  • And please pray that in dependence upon the Lord, that my labor for His glory would not be in vain

Bible Reading Commitment, Encouragement, and Challenge

April 26 –  Psalm 39, 2 Kings 5, Psalm 123-125, John 3:16-36

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • Focusing on Psalm 39
  • The Psalmist is committed to guard his ways that he may not sin
  • He longs to do this because he lives in a world filled with wicked people
  • But, he recognized that fighting sin is hard
  • His distress grew worse
  • His heart became angry and hot
  • And he spoke with his tongue with sin
  • The Psalmist pleads with God to make him know his end, to know how fleeting his life is
  • All mankind is but a mere breath
  • It is not worth living for sin
  • He prays for deliverance from his transgressions

How Points to Christ

  • Only with Christ does our fleeting life have meaning
  • Only through Christ will God deliver us from our transgressions

Apply

  • I have been struggling with the sin in my heart
  • The sin in my heart, though not necessary the sin of my tongue, has felt like fire burning in my heart
  • Though I want to fight, sometimes I feel like that sin inside of me is too great for me to bear
  • I need the truths of this Psalm
  • I need God to show me how futile my life is
  • I need God to show me the importance of watching my life in this world filled with wicked men who want to see God’s people sin against Him
  • I need God to show me the resurrection power over sin that He gives in the Gospel
  • Please pray that these would be true.
  • Please pray that God would be gracious to answer my plea for help to live for holiness and for His glory

Bible Reading Commitment, Encouragement, and Challenge

April 25 –  Psalm 38, 2 Kings 4, Psalm 120-122, John 3:1-15

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • Focusing on Psalm 121
  • When we see a mountain or a hill before us and are in need of help, where do we turn for help and refuge?
  • Only help from the Lord is sufficient
  • Only the Lord is the Creator who made heaven and earth
  • Only the Lord doesn’t need to slumber or sleep
  • Only the Lord never grows weary and is never fatigued from work
  • Only the Lord can keep us and protect us sufficiently
  • Only the Lord can keep us from all evil and preserve our life
  • And only the Lord can do all these things for eternity because only He is eternal

How Points to Christ

  • With the coming of Christ in the NT, we see that God does all these things in the Psalm through Christ
  • Christ is who we are hidden in
  • Christ is the one who preserves us life and gives us new life

Apply

  • Please pray that during times of difficulty and trials, that I would not turn to anything in this world for refuge
  • Please pray that I would recognize the sufficiency of God through Christ as revealed in the Scriptures in the power of the Holy Spirit
  • Please pray that I would turn only to the Lord for help, to proclaim His glory and power and sufficiency to the world
