July 30 – 1 Kings 5-7

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • Focusing on 1 Kings 5-7
  • Solomon builds the Temple of God and his palace in these chapters
  • The Temple of God is where God chose to put His presence among the people of Israel while on earth
  • The Lord’s Presence has been the key difference and distinguishing factor that set the people of Israel apart from all the other nations
  • The Lord’s Presence had been “portable” with Israel from the day they were freed from slavery to Egypt, through the journey to Mount Sinai, all the way to the Promised Land, through many rulers and kings until now, when the Lord chose to establish them in the land, and plant His presence in the Temple
  • This is a glorious day for the people of Israel
  • Yet, 1 Kings 6:1 is very helpful for my soul in my Christian walk
  • This glorious day occurred 480 years after the people of Israel came out of the land of Egypt
  • (God’s Promises for His people are CERTAIN because God is FAITHFUL, but they are fulfilled according to God’s sovereign TIMING, which often times “feels” long in our estimation, but is perfect according to God’s desires and good will)
  • (I am impatient, so these year markers are helpful to remind me how God works as He inevitably will bring me and all HIs people to glory in the new heavens and the new earth, the heavenly Canaan where the heavenly Temple is)
  • (These year markers help build in me perseverance amidst all the unknowns and uncertain things in this fallen world)

How Points to Christ

  • God in Christ has won the battle against Satan
  • God in Christ has secured eternal glory for all who are His through repentance and faith
  • For all those in Christ, we have a much more glorious Temple, the Lord Jesus Christ dwelling inside of us
  • Our hearts have become the temple of the Holy Spirit in Christ

Apply

  • Please pray for growing perseverance in the faith amidst trials
  • Please pray for faith in my life as I face tests and hardships

July 26 – John 16-18

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • Focusing on John 16:1-15
  • I praise God for the Holy Spirit!
  • I  praise God that when Christ ascended into heaven, He sent His Spirit to us
  • I praise God for the Holy Spirit because the work that He does is what I long to see, and I am thankful that He is powerful and able to accomplish the work, whereas I am not
  • I cannot convict the world of sin and righteousness – the Holy Spirit can and does!
  • I cannot convince people that judgment is real – the Holy Spirit can and does!
  • I cannot understand the truths and significance of what God reveals in His Word on my own – the Holy Spirit can and does – guiding us into all truth

How Points to Christ

  • Christ’s promise to never leave us or forsake us, being with us until the end is fulfilled in Him leaving us His Spirit
  • And the Spirit simply points all people to Christ as revealed in the Word
  • Christ is the truth that the Spirit guides us into
  • Christ had to die because of sin and righteousness of God
  • Christ bore judgment so we can be spared it and given life

Apply

  • Please pray that I would daily remember and praise God for the Holy Spirit, who is alive, living, active, and powerful
  • Please pray that I would be faithful to my calling to preach and pray fervently, and to simply trust the Holy Spirit to do His job and work to convict and lead people to Christ, the truth

Sexual Abuse is incredibly sad and heart-breaking.   Every time I hear about real cases of sexual abuse dealing with real people, it makes me mourn and cry out for the Lord to come quickly and bring about His new creation where all aspects of the sinful fall will be gone.

Yet, until then, the sad and heart-breaking reality of sexual abuse is real and devastating.  And, it is much more widespread and rampant than we think because sexual predators tend to be expert manipulators and deceivers.

I read this article this morning that promoted this reflection and prayer on sexual abuse.   I pray that you would be helped by this article.

Also, in the comments of that article, one brother listed some good resources for responding to sexual abuse/assault: (unfortunately, all the links there were half-links and didn’t really work when I copied and pasted.   But, I am sure that if you search google, you will find them pretty easily)

July 25 – Jeremiah 19-21

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • Focusing on Jeremiah 19-21
  • In these chapters, the bulk of it is describing in vivid detail the kind of destruction that is coming upon Israel and Jerusalem for their repeated and continual sin against God
  • The message of God’s judgment against sin is so bad that Jeremiah, the messenger is being persecuted and beaten because of it, because Jeremiah needs to shout “violence and destruction” as justice against Israel for sin
  • (God’s Judgment is real)
  • (God’s Judgment is fierce)
  • (God’s Judgment is deadly)
  • (God’s Judgment is just and fair because sin against God is that serious)
  • In love for God and God’s Word, and people, we must speak the message of God’s Judgment against sin, even though we may be beaten and persecuted
  • Jeremiah 20:9 says, “If I say, ‘I will not mention Him or speak any more in His name,’ there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot.”
  • Jeremiah is compelled from within his heart to speak God’s Word
  • And, amazingly, in chapter 21:8-9, amidst such severe judgment, there is still mercy and a way of life

How Points to Christ

  • How can God continue to show mercy and offer a way of life when we see how sinful and wretched the people are?
  • Only because in God’s plan, He will send His Son Jesus Christ to die as the savior of the world
  • On the cross, God’s severe, deadly, and just judgment came upon Christ instead of all sinners who repent and believe in Christ alone
  • And three days later, God resurrected Christ from the dead in victory over sin and death

Apply

  • Yet, there is still 2 ways to live that people must choose, a way of life and a way of death
  • And the way of death that comes from continuing in sin and refusing to submit to God by faith in Jesus Christ is much more severe than even the descriptions in Jeremiah
  • The way of death leads to eternal, conscious suffering and torment in hell
  • While really hard to say, please pray that God’s people would be compelled to say it
  • Please pray that God’s people would be really clear on both the bad news and also the good news, which shines forth so much brighter when the bad news is clearly proclaimed and understand
  • And please pray that through the proclamation of God’s Word from God’s people, that many would choose the way of life, the way of repentance of sin and faith in Christ alone
