December 23 – 2 Peter

Bible Reading Commitment, Encouragement, and Challenge

December 23 – 2 Peter

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • There is a lot in these chapters that could be meditated on!
  • Chapter 1, verses 5-8 are powerful, challenging, and humbling
  • 5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. 8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • If we read through the Gospels, the Pharisees got verses 5-6 down really well
  • Their virtue, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, and godliness were well-known by all
  • But, Christ-likeness doesn’t end there
  • True Christ-likeness takes all of that and it overflows into brotherly affection and love.
  • The Gospel addresses our personal life and our relational life

How Points to Christ

  • Jesus was the most godly man who ever lived
  • And Jesus was the most affectionate and loving man who ever lived
  • We need to keep knowing Jesus as a person to grow in true Christ-likeness

Apply

  • Please pray that I would be faithful to live these verses out
  • Please pray that I would keep growing in affection and love for others
  • Please pray that my life would not be merely a bunch of good theology and self-discipline, but one of practical love for others, especially loving others to preach the Gospel to them

December 22 – 1 Peter

Bible Reading Commitment, Encouragement, and Challenge

December 22 – 1 Peter

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • There is a lot in these chapters that could be meditated on!
  • 1 Peter is an excellent book to prepare Christians for suffering
  • Peter roots our hope not in this life and the circumstances of our life
  • But Peter roots our hope in future grace when Jesus returns
  • We have an imperishable, undefiled, and unfading inheritance awaiting us
  • Any and all suffering in this life is only in this life
  • Just as Jesus first experienced suffering and then entered eternal glory, so too must we who follow Christ

How Points to Christ

  • Jesus is the Suffering Servant who calls us to follow Him
  • Jesus is the Resurrected Lord who gives us a Living Hope

Apply

  • I don’t deal well with suffering often, so please pray that I would root my hope and joy, not in the circumstances of this world, but in the future grace to  come
  • Please pray that I would respond distinctly to suffering, so as to display the glory of the Gospel
  • Please pray that Christians and churches will be prepared to experience suffering because in this fallen world, if we live long enough, we will suffer in general, and for our faith
  • And please pray that God would use His suffering people to spread His Gospel far and wide

December 21 – James

Bible Reading Commitment, Encouragement, and Challenge

December 21 – James

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • There is a lot in these chapters that could be meditated on!
  • James talks a lot about the other side of the coin of true faith
  • While it is true and faith and faith alone saves, James is clear that true faith can be seen by accompanying works
  • For example, breathing doesn’t make a person alive, breathing is simply a sign that a person is alive
  • Works without faith is like attaching a respirator to a dead person – it can make breathing noises, but it doesn’t make the dead person alive
  • Faith without works is like going up to a person and checking his vital signs, and finding no breathing and no pulse
  • Faith and works go hand in hand.  If someone is alive, they will be breathing and moving
  • That is what James is seeking to establish as he is clear that we must not simply be hearers of God’s Word, but doers

How Points to Christ

  • Jesus is the active agent in our faith
  • Jesus is transforming us into His image, so works is a necessary by-product of faith in Jesus, to show that Jesus is truly at work

Apply

  • Please pray that I would constantly seek to be a doer of God’s Word, not simply a hearer (or reader) of God’s Word
  • And please pray that churches would help people apply God’s Word with the power of the Gospel

Bible Reading Commitment, Encouragement, and Challenge

December 19-20 – Hebrews 7-13

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • There is a lot in these chapters that could be meditated on!
  • Hebrews is such a humbling, soul-satisfying book about the supremacy of Jesus Christ
  • Jesus is the supreme priest, bringing a supreme offering, establishing a supreme covenant
  • Chapter 11 hits the crucial human side of how to come under the supremacy of Jesus Christ
  • It is all about FAITH, not works
  • Genealogy doesn’t matter
  • Money doesn’t matter
  • Works doesn’t matter
  • Looks doesn’t matter
  • It is all about faith – by FAITH, people come under the supremacy of Jesus Christ

How Points to Christ

  • Jesus is supreme and all-glorious
  • Everything points to His uniqueness and greatness

Apply

  • Please pray that I would grow in faith
  • And please pray that I would seek to call all people to faith in Jesus Christ, trusting in the power of God’s Word
