Bible Reading Commitment, Encouragement, and Challenge

August 31 –  Numbers 19, Isaiah 11-12, Lamentations 1, Ephesians 3

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • Focusing on Isaiah 11-12
  • In the midst of this fallen and broken world that is increasingly getting worse, these chapters give great hope
  • They were first set in the midst of chapters of God’s righteous judgment on the nations
  • But, God, in His undeserved kindness and grace will save
  • In an election year with no ideal option to vote for, what a joy it is to read that one day, God will provide His righteous branch to spring forth
  • He will rule with righteousness
  • With righteousness, he shall judge the poor
  • He will rule with justice, killing the wicked, and lifting up the righteous
  • There will be no corruption
  • He will have the Spirit of wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, and knowledge
  • And, the world in which He rules as leader will be filled with peace
  • The wolf will no longer attack and destroy the lamb, but will dwell together
  • The leopard will no longer rip apart and eat the goat, but shall lie down together
  • This day is coming!  Praise God!

How Points to Christ

  • Jesus Christ is the righteous branch from the stump of Jesse that God will send forth
  • Jesus will be the focal point of God’s salvation of His people
  • The only reason why God’s anger could be turned away from us was because Jesus redirected God’s anger toward Himself as our substitute

Apply

  • Please pray that I would constantly live with great hope of this great future
  • And please pray that with such a secure hope, that I would proclaim the Gospel so that more people would become God’s people and have this future for them as well
  • The Lord is our strength and song, but only for those who turn to Him and call upon His name through Jesus

Bible Reading Commitment, Encouragement, and Challenge

August 30 –  Numbers 18, Isaiah 10, Song of Solomon 8, Ephesians 2

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • Focusing on Ephesians 2
  • As a Christian – I WAS dead in trespasses and sins
  • I ONCE walked in disobedience, living in passions of my flesh
  • BUT GOD – being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us
  • Even when we were dead and walking in disobedience, He made us alive with Christ
  • All by grace
  • All Christians are no longer dead
  • All Christians are no longer enslaved to the passions of their flesh
  • God created us in Christ Jesus for good works that we should walk in them

How Points to Christ

  • Life comes only through Christ’s death for us and giving us His life

Apply

  • Please pray that during times of struggle (especially with sins I have struggled with for so long) that I would remember that I am not dead, but alive
  • I don’t have to sin anymore
  • I don’t have to keep doing what I used to do
  • I don’t have to give in to the passions of my flesh
  • Please pray for grace and resolve to fight these sins
  • And please pray for diligence to do good works for Christ that God has prepared beforehand
  • All by grace, so no room for pride!

Bible Reading Commitment, Encouragement, and Challenge

August 29 –  Psalm 96, Isaiah 9, Song of Solomon 7, Ephesians 1

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • Focusing on Ephesians 1
  • Ephesians is one of my favorite books!
  • The sovereignty of God is one of the most comforting truths in my life
  • God is sovereignly generous – He gives every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places to those in Christ
  • God is sovereignly loving – in love He predestined us to be adopted through Jesus Christ
  • God is sovereignly merciful and gracious – He redeemed us through the book of His Son, which was according to the riches of his grace
  • God is sovereignly lavish – In Christ we have obtained an inheritance
  • God is sovereignly wise – He predestines us according to His wise purpose who works all things according to the counsel of His will
  • God is sovereignly powerful – all those He predestined, He seals with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance from now, through this broken and messed up world – until we attain it in heaven to the praise of His glory
  • God is sovereignly glorious – all glory goes to Him and God works all things for His glory

How Points to Christ

  • All of this can only be true in Christ
  • Outside of Christ, we have no hope, no blessing, no inheritance, no true wisdom

Apply

  • Please pray that I would live a life of praise as I see more of God’s glory in His manifold attributes and work
  • And please pray that I would simply overflow in proclaiming such a glorious God and Gospel to all those around me
  • And please pray that God would sovereignly call many more into such glory

Bible Reading Commitment, Encouragement, and Challenge

August 28 –  Psalm 95, Isaiah 8, Song of Solomon 6, Galatians 6

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • Focusing on Song of Solomon 6
  • The vivid, in-depth, passionate love between the husband and wife in this book is powerful and convicting
  • They are passionate in being delighted in one another
  • They pursue each other
  • They spend time with each other
  • They compliment each other
  • They have good, sexual intimacy with each other
  • They are committed to one another
  • They are each other’s beloved, dearly loved

How Points to Christ

  • The love and commitment expressed and seen in the best human marriage is but a faint picture of the most pure and most perfect love and commitment Jesus Christ has for His church
  • God designed marriage to be a mystery of Christ’s relationship (husband) to the church (wife)

Apply

  • Please pray that no matter how long I am married to my wife, that I would never grow tired of pursuing her and dating her
  • Please pray that my attraction, affection, joy, and delight in my wife would keep growing until the day I die
  • And please pray that the by God’s grace, I would grow in reflecting Christ’s love for the church in how I love my wife, and may our marriage grow in accurately reflecting the Gospel
