Bible Reading Commitment, Encouragement, and Challenge

July 30 –  Numbers 4, Ezekiel 27, Proverbs 24, 1 Corinthians 11

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • Focusing on Proverbs 24
  • Verse 1 – “Be not envious of evil men, nor desire to be with them, for their hearts devise violence and their lips talk of trouble”
  • Then, much of the rest of the chapter talks about the blessings of wisdom
  • I meditated on the first verse because in my sinful flesh, I need to hear clear calls from God not to be envious of evil men
  • What evil men do are truly alluring
  • Sin is truly alluring
  • (Many times, as Christians, we do a disfavor to other professing Christians by making it seem like sin is no big deal and not appealing at all once we become Christian)
  • (But, since we still live in our sinful flesh, though we are new creatures, we still battle against sin, and sin is appetizing to our flesh)
  • (It is normal for a Christian to be tempted and enticed by sin – not normal to keep practicing and indulging in it, but it doesn’t change how alluring and hard it is to fight against sin)
  • That is why we need to constantly be reminded not to be envious of evil men and the sin they so enjoy
  • We need to be constantly reminded of the blessings of wisdom and of following Christ in true, lasting freedom and joy, not the temporary, destructive tastes of sin

How Points to Christ

  • Only Jesus was the perfectly wise, good man
  • Only Jesus was not evil and resisted the temptations of sin His whole life
  • Jesus is our wisdom
  • And Jesus defeats evil and sin
  • Jesus gives us new life to begin to hate sin and love good

Apply

  • Please pray that I would not be envious of evil men and the sin they enjoy
  • I have been convicted that so often when I talk about Christianity and my Christian faith, I talk about “all I have to give up” when I come to Christ
  • But, I tend to focus on the cross (which is 100% true, which we must take up)
  • But, I tend to neglect the infinitely greater JOY that comes when I take up the cross to follow Jesus
  • I do give up sin, but I gain eternal joy and pleasure in God’s presence through Christ
  • Please pray that I would be clear on the costs, but much more clear on the joys and benefits of following Jesus

Bible Reading Commitment, Encouragement, and Challenge

July 27 –  Psalm 81-82, Ezekiel 24, Proverbs 22, 1 Corinthians 9

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • Focusing on 1 Corinthians 9
  • Given how great the Gospel is
  • Given how lost and hopeless sinful people are (all mankind)
  • Paul says in verse 16 – “Woe is me if I do not preach the Gospel”
  • The glorious Gospel is like fire in his bones that he just cannot contain within himself

How Points to Christ

  • All of Scripture and all of redemptive history points to the glory and greatness of Jesus and what He accomplished in the Gospel

Apply

  • I so often don’t feel the same as Paul
  • The Gospel is not so glorious in my mind and heart
  • The lostness and dire state of all mankind is not so pressing in my mind and heart
  • The glory and greatness of God, whom we are reconciled to is not as wonderful in my mind and heart
  • Therefore, so often I do not feel “woe is me if I do not preach the Gospel”
  • But, I want to feel it
  • I want to be so overwhelmed by God and His Gospel that I cannot contain it within it
  • Please pray for me for this
  • And please pray for God’s church that the Gospel would be so amazing that we would never want to move on from the Gospel nor keep the Gospel to ourselves, but to love it more and proclaim it to all those around us

Are you like me, someone who at times (often many times), someone who struggles with evangelism?

Knowing what to say?  Knowing how to say it?  Knowing how to connect the Gospel to the specific person you are talking to?  Knowing how to cultivate a heart and lifestyle of evangelism, versus just viewing it as a check box?

If so, there is so much more that could be said, but I read this blog post this morning that was helpful for my heart and soul as I pray to God for growth in an evangelistic lifestyle that loves people, listens to them, and knows how to connect the Gospel to them specifically in their sins and struggles.

Bible Reading Commitment, Encouragement, and Challenge

July 26 –  Numbers 3, Ezekiel 23, Proverbs 21, 1 Corinthians 8

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • Focusing on Ezekiel 23
  • God never minces words when He talks about sin and how serious and heinous sin is
  • God talks of two sisters, Oholah and Oholibah
  • They represent Samaria (Israel) and Jerusalem (Judah)
  • Both sisters are whores
  • Sin is whoring against God who created us
  • Sin is whoring against God who is the greatest treasure, the one we exchange for adulterous lovers
  • And even though God punished the older sister severely for her whoring against Him, Oholibah, the younger sister didn’t care
  • She saw the consequences of whoring against God, but she indulged in whoring even more than her older sister
  • (We are worse then both!)
  • (Much of the Old Testament shows us the just and severe consequences for sin and whoring against God)
  • (But, we still so often delight in our sin and whoring)
  • (We don’t heed all the horrible judgments the people received, and we sin more against God)
  • (How much MORE judgment and destruction do we deserve?)

How Points to Christ

  • Only Jesus Christ was pure and holy
  • Only Jesus Christ was faithful to God the Father
  • Only Jesus Christ never turned aside to any sinful, idolatrous lovers
  • And only Jesus Christ deserved life and blessing from God instead of wrath and judgment

Apply

  • Please pray that the seriousness of sin and whoring against God would be clear in my mind and heart
  • Please pray that I would hate the numerous ways I sin and whore against God
  • Please pray that I would hate my sin with a growing passion
  • And please pray that I would recognize daily that my only hope is not “to try harder,” but to recognize that my whoring was so bad that I need Jesus’ holy and righteous sacrifice on the cross to save me and give me hope
  • I am utterly amazed that the pure and holy Jesus would choose to love and die for a defiled whore like me
  • Please pray that I would live daily in such gratitude and love toward Jesus who loved me and saved me for His glory
