Bible Reading Commitment, Encouragement, and Challenge

October 30 –  Deuteronomy 8, Hosea 5-6, 1 Chronicles 5, Hebrews 11:1-22

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • Focusing on Deuteronomy 8
  • We have weak minds
  • We so easily forget things
  • We so easily forget the most important things, even when there is overwhelming and repeated examples of great things
  • In this chapter, for Israel, who had experienced such amazing evidences of God’s power and grace, Moses calls them in verse 11 to TAKE CARE lest they forget the Lord
  • If they were not active to REMEMBER God and God’s grace, they would quickly forget

How Points to Christ

  • Such it is with us
  • We have the great examples of God’s grace and power in the Gospel of Jesus Christ
  • God became a man to die for sinful men who were His enemies so that we could be reconciled as His friends and adopted as His children
  • But, we too so easily forget
  • Hebrews 3 tells us that we need to encourage each other EVERY DAY because of the deceitfulness of sin and how easy we forget God’s grace in Jesus Christ

Apply

  • Please pray that I would be careful not to forget the Lord my God
  • Please pray that I would seek to preach the Gospel to myself every day to have His undeserved grace fresh in my mind every day
  • And please pray for steadfastness and perseverance to encourage others patiently in the Gospel as well

This question has been boggling my mind before, but much more recently as well (because at our church God has blessed us with more college students from various different parachurch ministries).  Could use help.  =)

In church history, when Christians go off to school or college, when did the shift occur between college students first asking, “What local church should I join and invest in,” to “What college parachurch fellowship ministry should I join?”

At what point in church history have local churches suddenly felt the need to be more “apologetic” about their role in God’s plan revealed in Scripture?  Among students, the big question among many is no longer, “what is the strategic role of the college parachurch ministry as I am an active member of a local church.  The big question now seems to be, “since I am active in a college parachurch ministry, why do I need to (1) attend a local church, (2) join a local church, (3) invest as an active member of a local church?

God’s plan of His local church is everywhere in the New Testament, so, among college students, at what point in church history has its central place in God’s plan suddenly been displaced and now need to be defended?

As a local church pastor, I have found myself needing to open up the Scriptures more and more often to show the importance of God’s plan of the local church, especially during the college years.   But, nobody seems to be asking the opposite question, but simply assuming it.  Where in Scripture do we see the parachurch, and when in church history did college parachurches start? (was God’s plan revealed in Scripture not sufficient until then?)   Please don’t get me wrong.  I am NOT saying that I am against all parachurches.

I am simply wondering when Christians began to assume the central place of the parachurch and question the role of the local church versus recognizing the central place of the Local Church in the Scriptures and honestly wrestling through the strategic role of the parachurch in coming alongside and supporting the local church?   Please Help if you have insight!

Bible Reading Commitment, Encouragement, and Challenge

October 29 –  Deuteronomy 7, Hosea 4, 1 Chronicles 3-4, Hebrews 10:19-39

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • Focusing on Deuteronomy 7
  • God is undeservingly sovereign and free in His choices
  • Verses 6-11 are powerful
  • Israel is made a people holy to the Lord their God
  • God has chosen them to be His people for His treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth
  • Why?
  • It was not anything in them
  • They were not better or more numerous
  • They were weak and the fewest
  • It was only because God chose to set His love upon them and redeem them
  • The Lord God chose to make a covenant with them and is faithful to keep His steadfast love to those who love him
  • God will also repay those who hate him and destroy them
  • Therefore, as God’s people, they are called to be careful to do the commandment that He commands
  • God is the King

How Points to Christ

  • God’s faithfulness and steadfast love leads to Christ
  • In Christ, God chooses people for His treasured possession not because of our righteous deeds or religious background
  • God chooses His people simply because He loves us and what He accomplished for us in Christ, His life, death, and resurrection

Apply

  • Please pray that I would joyfully obey all of God’s commands as His new people
  • Please pray that I would be CAREFUL, not lackadaisical in studying and applying His Word
  • Please pray that I would be comforted by His undeserving and sovereign election and choice that is all by grace and because of Christ
  • To Him along be the glory!

Bible Reading Commitment, Encouragement, and Challenge

October 26 –  Deuteronomy 6:4-25, Hosea 2-3, 1 Chronicles 2, Hebrews 10:1-18

Observe with some (Interpretation in Parentheses)

  • Focusing on Hosea 2-3
  • Glorious truths in these chapters
  • We are all spiritual whores, just like Israel
  • We deserve to be rejected by God
  • We deserve to be punished by God
  • But, God bought us out of our whoredom to be HIS!

How Points to Christ

  • God bought us with the blood of His own Son Jesus Christ
  • Jesus shed His blood to make us His bride
  • We can wear the pure, white wedding gown, not because of our purity, but because Jesus clothes us with His

Apply

  • Please pray that this glorious truth would amaze me daily, that I would seek to live as His bride, and that I would seek to tell other whores, like me, that they can be cleansed, forgiven, made pure and white, and become Jesus’ bride as well
